The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has launched the Easy Translation Guide for Foreign Nationals and presented certificates to participants of the Living and Working and Ireland - Community Leadership Course.

The Easy Translation Guide for Foreign Nationals contains commonly used words and phrases that will be of benefit to both service providers and service users in the community.

Speaking at the Hotel Kilmore on Saturday morning (1 November), the Minister complimented Cavan Partnership for their work on behalf of immigrants: “Cavan Partnership has been at the forefront of recognising the needs of migrant communities. Their responses have been both innovative and proactive through the provision of a variety of supports, information and English classes” the Minister said.

The Minister alluded to the fact that Census 2006 showed that 9% of the residents of County Cavan were non-Irish, with the majority coming from EU countries, particularly from the UK, Poland and Lithuania. “Members of new communities who have arrived in Cavan are neighbours, friends, work colleagues, classmates-in short they are stakeholders in our country. As stakeholders in our communities, it is vitally important that they are aware of their rights and responsibilities and partake fully in the activities which are taking place in their local areas”, he added.

He complimented those who were receiving certificates for the Living and Working in Ireland- Community Leadership course, as an excellent initiative to help the local immigrant community to improve their translation skills and to enable them to work more closely with local service providers, schools and the Garda Síochána.

In conclusion he wished every success to the community leaders and other bodies working in the area of integration in County Cavan and commended all involved for the initiative.
