Smith confirms 55 new jobs for Cavan Town

125 new jobs for the Town in the last week

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that 55 new jobs are to be created at Tarpey’s SuperValu supermarket, Drumalee Commerical Centre, Cavan Town.

Speaking at the official opening of the new 13,000 sq ft supermarket, the Minister said that the last week had been a marvellous one for the Town in terms of new jobs: “This day last week, I was delighted to welcome An Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Ms. Mary Coughlan to the Town where she announced that 70 new high quality jobs are to be created at Pauwels Trafo Ireland Ltd. Today I can confirm that this state-of-the art retail store will provide around 55 new jobs for local people. By any measure this is a tremendous vote of confidence in the future of Cavan Town and I look forward to further positive news on the jobs front”, he said.

Congratulating Mr. Sean Tarpey for the development of what is his second supermarket in Cavan Town, the Minister said that Tarpey’s SuperValu was set to become one of the largest employers in the Town with 120 staff between the two stores.

As well as directly creating a significant number of new jobs, Minister Smith also acknowledged that in keeping with the policy of the SuperValu chain to source at least 75% of their goods from Irish companies, many local jobs were being supported: “This new store and its sister operation on the Dublin Road, is helping to sustain many jobs in local companies in County Cavan. As a local public representative, I am delighted at the contribution Tarpey’s Super Valu is making to the community here in Cavan Town and as the Minister with responsibility for Food, I want to acknowledge the very significant contribution that the chain makes to supporting the Irish Food industry, which is now worth over €16 billion per year”, he said.

Minister Smith concluded that the new store was a real vote of confidence in the Cavan region and is set to become a major retail landmark for many years to come.
