Smith welcomes go-ahead for €3 million Castle Saunderson Project
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has warmly welcomed the approval of over €3 million in funding to develop a 30 acre multi-activity and adventure Centre at the Castle Saunderson Estate on the Cavan/Fermanagh border.
The project has been funded through PEACE 111, which is administered by the Special EU Programme Body (SEUPB) and sponsored by the Department of Finance and Department of Finance and Personnel in Northern Ireland. It will allow for a permanent jamboree site to be developed which will cater for not only scouting organisations, but youth organisations and schools, as well as being shared with adults throughout the island of Ireland.
Minister Smith said that as a local public representative he had been behind the development of this important project from the start and he offered particular congratulations to Cavan County Manager, Mr. Jack Keyes for his central role in bringing it to fruition. “I am delighted that this flagship project has now secured the funding to proceed. As a border Deputy, I am particularly pleased that it has secured funding through the EU PEACE 111 Programme, which is a direct by-product of the Peace Process and has done so much to improve relationships and build trust on this part of our island”, he said.
He added that the Castle Sauderson Project would consolidate relationships between Counties Fermanagh and Cavan and had the potential to be a major tourist attraction for those seeking outdoor pursuits and activities. “I would also like to acknowledge the role of Scouting Ireland (SAI) and the Scouting Association of Northern Ireland (SANI) who worked very closely with Cavan County Council to secure the funding which will now see the development of a project for which this entire region and its people can be very proud”, he concluded
