The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has announced funding of €42,000 for a number of animal welfare organisations in Cavan and Monaghan.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has announced funding of €42,000 for a number of animal welfare organisations in Cavan and Monaghan.

Announcing the ex-gratia payments, Minister Smith said that he was pleased to be able to support these largely voluntary bodies in their work in delivering animal welfare services.

The following groups will benefit:

  • Cavan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals           €15,000
  • Joan’s Arc, Glangevlin                                                              €5,000
  • Monaghan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals    €20,000
  • Carrick Boarding Kennels/Dog Shelter                                     €2,000

“I am very pleased to have been in a position to announce these payments which will help the groups in their important work for the year ahead. I am deeply conscious of the largely voluntary work undertaken by these groups offering a sanctuary to unwanted animals.

The post-Christmas period is sadly a very busy time for animal shelters as pets given as presents are often abandoned. I would appeal to parents who intend to give small animals as pets this Christmas to fully consider the considerable commitment required to care for pets before purchasing them for their children”, the Minister said.
