The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith, has confirmed that €100,000 in funding has been allocated to a number of services supporting older people in Cavan Town.
The funding has been allocated through the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Health Services Executive for small –scale health and community projects in RAPID areas.
The local services to benefit are:
- €10,000 for the purchase of security cameras and lighting for housing units operated by the St. Vincent de Paul.
- €45,000 for the development of a drop-in centre for older people in existing building in Bridge Street, Cavan Town.
- €45,000 for the purchase of a community bus to improve access to services and activities for older people in Cavan Town. This will benefit the following groups: Positive Age; Cavan Social Services; The Golden Oldies, Tullacmongan, Teach Oscail Family Resource Project and Cavan Partnership 050 Network.
“I am delighted to confirm this very significant level of funding towards a number of support services for older people in Cavan Town. Despite the fact that the public finances are under severe pressure, the Government continues to prioritise funding towards strengthening community services, and in particular those for older people. This funding will have a very significant impact in improving the quality of life for some of the more vulnerable older people in our local community and is a very welcome boost at this time of year” the Minister said.
Minister Smith also complimented the many voluntary local organisations and the HSE for the excellent work that is undertaken in these valuable projects.
