Major Roadworks Programme continues with €7.5 Million allocation for National Roads
Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have welcomed the allocation by the National Roads Authority to Cavan County Council of € 7.5 million in respect of the National Roads Programme for 2010.
Minister Smith stated that this funding will mean further significant improvement in road conditions throughout the county. He stated that it is absolutely essential to continue this work to give the people of the county the proper standard of roads to which they are entitled. He added that this major funding will ensure a substantial improvement in the county’s road network this year.
Major projects in Cavan to be funded include a further € 3.2 million for the Belturbet By-Pass, €1.4 million for the Corduff to Ballytrust Realignment on the N55 and €625,000 for the Ballyconnell Inner Relief Road. Also receiving funding will be the N16 Blacklion Belcoo Bridge, which is getting €100,000 and € 100,000 for the N3 North of Kells to Cavan.
The Cavan Fianna Fáil Representatives also confirmed that major funding is to go towards safety improvements which include € 100,000 at Castlesaunderson Junction, €80,000 at Bailieboro Road Junction, Virginia, €60,000 at Bunn, €50,000 at N3 and N87 roundabout approaches, €50,000 at Gannon’s Cross, €30,000 at Aghadreennagh NS; €35,000 at Garrymore Bends, €27,000 at Ballyhugh Bends, €25,000 at Killynaher and €20,000 at Ballyconnell Town.
Senator Wilson stated that along with Minister Smith, the Fianna Fáil County and Town Councillors had continued to impress upon the Transport Minister and the National Roads Authority the need to continue the high level of investment for the National Roads Programme.
Minister Smith stated that the National Roads Programme allocations were very welcome, particularly in view of the very difficult economic circumstances facing the Government. He added that this allocation will mean that a significant amount of additional work will be undertaken in the county this year due to more competitive pricing in the construction sector. They added that Minister Dempsey will be announcing further allocations to the Council for the 2010 Non-National Roads Programme.
Minister Smith and Senator Wilson also welcomed the allocation of € 7.3 million to Monaghan County Council under the National Roads Programme 2010.
