The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/ Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has welcomed the launch of the UNESCO-accredited expansion of the Marble Arch Caves European Geopark into west County Cavan.

Speaking at the Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell, where Northern Ireland Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Ms. Arlene Foster was also in attendance, Minister Smith highlighted the fact that what was being launched was a world first, representing the designation of the first international Geopark anywhere in the world. He also pointed to the fact that it was brought to fruition due to the long-standing cooperation and commitment of Cavan County Council and Fermanagh District Council over the past couple of years.

“Their joint action has demonstrated a deepening commitment to peaceful reconciliation that I believe will certainly act as an impetus to economic regeneration in these border communities, which have suffered greatly as a result of civil strife in the past”, he said.

Minister Smith also acknowledged the role of the Geological Surveys of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the Forest Service in Northern Ireland and Coillte in Co. Cavan, tourism officers in both Counties, as well as the Special EU Programmes Body.

Stating that the designation of an international Geopark in this part of Ireland will be a major boost to marketing the region and in providing a sustainable tourism experience for visitors, the Minister highlighted the fact that a very full programme of events and activities are planned for all age groups throughout the year which will be supported by excellent signage, touring/walking guides and other attractively illustrated literature. “I have no doubt that in the future, it is our natural and cultural environment which will continue to underpin our unique tourism experience here and set us apart from other destinations”, he said.

In conclusion, Minister Smith said that he was delighted to be associated with a world first for this border region. “The natural and ancient geological heritage of Counties Cavan and Fermanagh will now be showcased on a world stage and with it bring very significant economic, social and cultural benefits to this part of our island”, he concluded.
