€ 22 Million funding for Co. Cavan’s Non National Roads and Laneways for 2008
Minister for Children, Brendan Smith T.D. and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have welcomed the allocation of €18.45 Million by the Minister for Transport, Mr Noel Dempsey, T.D., to Co. Cavan for this year’s Non-National Roads Restoration and Improvement Programme and a further €13.247 Million has already been allocated in respect of the National Roads Programme.
The Fianna Fáil Oireachtas Members stated that the Transport Minister, Noel Dempsey, T.D., allocated:-
- · € 18.17 Million to Cavan County Council
- · € 287,000 to Cavan Town Council
and Cavan County Council is providing € 3.5 Million funding from its own resources towards the Roads Programme this year.
Minister Smith added that this funding will mean further significant improvements in road conditions throughout the county. € 909,000 has been included under the Local Improvement Scheme. He added that the Minister’s road works grant allocation and his funding of Local Government Services will mean a rapid continuation of the road restoration programme, which has been under way for a number of years. The Fianna Fáil Deputy stated that it is absolutely essential to continue this work to give the people of the county the proper standard of roads to which they are entitled. He added that this major funding will ensure a substantial improvement in the county’s road network this year.
The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. stated that of particular significance is the allocation of € 200,000 to the Council in respect of preliminary design work for a strategic route (East West from Dundalk to Sligo). He added that the development of this route is of the utmost importance for Co. Cavan.
€ 200,000 has also been allocated in respect of design work for the Cavan Eastern Town Centre Access Route and € 98,781 in respect of design work for the Cavan Northern Strategic Link Road.
Senator Wilson stated that along with Minister Smith, the Fianna Fáil County and Town Councillors had continued to impress upon the Transport Minister the need to continue the high level of investment in the Road Works Programme.
Minister Smith stated that further allocations will be made to the County Council under the CLÁR Programme for the repair of laneways. He added that the National Roads Authority had already allocated €13.247 Million to the County Council towards this year’s Roadworks Programme for the National Primary and National Secondary Routes and he stated that this very substantial funding in excess of € 35 Million will enable the Council to carry out a major roadworks programme throughout all of the county in 2008.
