Smith opens upgraded facilities at St. Mogue’s and St. Bricin’s Colleges


The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and Cavan/Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith, today officially opened upgraded facilities at St. Mogue’s College, Bawnboy and St. Bricin’s College, Belturbet.

Total funding in excess of €920,000 has been provided by the Department of Education and Science towards the cost of the new facilities at the two VEC colleges:

 

St.Mogue’s

 

  • conversion of an old metalwork room into two new classrooms. One of the classrooms has been fitted out as a Technology Lab.
  • upgrading the college’s IT network facilities;
  • provision of interactive whiteboards, PCs and data projectors;  
  • re-wiring the college, installing a fire alarm system and a communications system;
  • roof works and repairs to front entrance. (to be completed during the summer)

 

St. Bricin’s

 

  • a state of the art Home Economics room;
  • upgrading of the Science Lab;
  • replacement of windows throughout the school.

 

Speaking to pupils, teachers, parents and local representatives at two separate events, Minister Smith said he was delighted to be able to celebrate the opening of the new facilities at both colleges which shared many similarities in terms of the recently upgraded facilities, the size of the schools, their ethos and their progressive attitudes.

 

The Minister also praised Cavan VEC and the management at both colleges who have shown great spirit in continuously striving to develop and improve facilities in line with the needs of the people Bawnboy and Belturbet. He paid a special tribute to all of the former principals and teachers that have contributed so significantly to the education and development of the many thousands of students that have passed through their doors over the years.

 

Wishing the principals, teachers and support staff continued success in their future work, the Minister concluded that the two projects were further examples of the Government’s ongoing investment in schools to enhance the learning and working environment for students and teachers.
