The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has performed the

official opening of an additional accommodation facility in Cavan Institute of Further Education.

The additional accommodation, houses new Hairdressing Salons, the School of Caring Services, a new Library and a Learning Support Centre designed to benefit all students. The new facility, allows for the consolidation of almost all of Cavan Institute on one site, and lends itself to a campus community.

Speaking at the Institute, Minister Smith said that he was happy to celebrating the official launch of the additional accommodation facility in Cavan Institute of Further Education, which is he said “to the forefront in the development and enhancement of educational service provision in County Cavan”.

He went on to praise the role of the Institute. “I understand that the number of students in the Institute currently stands at over 1300, and has grown significantly in recent years.   The growth of a college is a positive statement about its past pupils and its current management and staff.  In this way, the growth of Cavan Institute is a tribute to yourselves, and is a testament to the confidence of the whole community in the Director and all the staff”, the Minister said.

Recognising that the whole area of Further Education has grown in stature and popularity and people all over the country recognise that a return to learning offers a wide variety of options to them in their daily lives, Minister Smith noted that large percentages of students from Cavan Institute continue their studies at Athlone Institute of Technology and NUI Maynooth.  The Institute has also been instrumental in the development of the North East Further and Higher Education Alliance (NEFHE) with Dundalk IT, to encourage further progression of students from Cavan to Dundalk at advanced level entry onto degree courses.

In conclusion, he paid tribute to Director Ms. Ann Marie Lacey, as well the commitment and dedication of her team of staff.  He also thanked County Cavan VEC Chairman, Cllr. Clifford Kelly and CEO Mr. Colm McEvoy for their ongoing support. “Together you have created an educational environment that students can access, achieve both at personal and academic levels and then progress to employment or further education and training.  I thank you for your hard and worthwhile work, and I want to acknowledge its value”, he said.
