The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that €700,000 has been allocated to the HSE Dublin/North East region, which includes Cavan and Monaghan, under the Special Housing Aid for the Elderly Scheme.

The funding, which has been approved by the Minister for Housing and Local Services, Mr. Michael Finneran, T.D., will allow for essential repairs and improvements to be made in households occupied by older people, 85,000 of whom have already benefited since the schemes inception.

Minister Smith said that the Special Housing Aid for the Elderly Scheme was a very important and long running initiative which plays a key role in making older people more comfortable in their own homes. “Coupled with recent similar housing improvement grants for older people with a disability, this is a further example of the Government’s commitment to support the most deserving in our society”, he said.

He added that the Fianna Fáil Councillors has consistently lobbied to have substantial funding provided in respect of schemes that enable improvement works to be carried out to the homes of elderly persons.
