Lisdaran Unit for the Elderly must be protected

Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD, Brendan Smith has tabled a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Health seeking a categoric assurance that there will be no downgrading of the status of the Lisdaran Nursing Unit for the Elderly.

Deputy Smith stated “The Lisdaran Unit plays a critical role in the care of the elderly in Co. Cavan. It is necessary to make maximum use of the unit. There can be no reduction in the level of service provided in the nursing unit.

“I seek an assurance from the Minister that there will be no reduction in the level of services or bed capacity of the Lisdaran unit. Making the maximum use of the nursing unit will contribute to the HSE’s own goal of optimising the provision of quality care.

“The families who have loved ones being cared for to a very high standard in the Lisdaran Unit seek an assurance on its future and the level of services to be provided there. Similarly, all the staff deserve to know the exact position.  The Government through leaking stories about the reduction of services are causing widespread concern and it is totally wrong that patients, their families and the staff learn of these proposals through the media.  I sincerely hope that these rumours are without foundation, stated Brendan Smith”.

Deputy Smith paid tribute to the staff working in the HSE nursing units in Lisdaran, Ballyconnell and Virginia for delivering a highly professional and excellent standard of care. He said he has known many families who very much appreciate the care and attention given to their loves ones. He said these centres and the private nursing homes each play a pivotal role in healthcare provision in Co. Cavan and it is vital this role is recognised, protected and maintained.
