FAILURE TO EXTEND SLURRY SPREADING PERIOD MOST DISAPPOINTING – BRENDAN SMITH TD
Mr Brendan Smith TD has outlined his concerns that the Environment Minister has refused to extend the period for slurry spreading.
The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD was speaking following Parliamentary Questions he tabled in Dáil Éireann regarding the need to extend the slurry spreading period due to the continuing bad weather throughout October which, in effect, meant that farmers were unable to carry out this work before the end of the month.
Deputy Smith added that the Environment Minister, Mr Hogan, stated that he is not prepared to consider a further extension to the period for spreading slurry.
The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD stated that he received numerous calls from farmers who are most anxious that the slurry spreading period should be extended to November 30 as happened in 2008.
Brendan Smith is making a further call on the Government to have this matter urgently reconsidered in view of the very heavy rainfall that occurred throughout all of the Autumn.
The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD stated that it is incumbent upon the Agriculture Minister to bring his influence to bear on this situation as so many farmers throughout the country are affected by the Government’s negative response to their requests. With an expected few days of dry weather this concession should be granted to allow farmers deal urgently with this necessary work concluded Brendan Smith.
