COMMON SENSE MUST PREVAIL IN LAND

Mr Brendan Smith TD, former Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has called on the Ministers for Agriculture and the Environment to ensure that any new regulations in relation to farm maintenance and land improvement work must not be restrictive or place unnecessary burdens on farmers.

Deputy Smith stated that there was widespread concern among the farming community in relation to the possible implementation of new regulations and it is incumbent upon the Ministers to ensure that they negotiate a practical outcome with the European Commission.

“I faced far more formidable and difficult obstacles in working on the Review of the Nitrates Action Programme a year ago and I succeeded in getting a very good outcome.  That outcome was particularly important for farmers in areas like Cavan and Monaghan and also very important for the pig and poultry sectors.
