Smith welcomes 60th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

Statement by Brendan Smith T.D., Cavan/Monaghan and Fianna Fáil

Spokesperson on Education and Skills

“I welcome the 60th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which is underway in Cavan Town and extend a warm welcome to all visitors to this spectacular event, the world’s biggest traditional music festival.

The very best in Irish culture will be showcased during Fleadh 2011 and I have no doubt that this year’s celebration will build on the huge success of the 2010 Fleadh in Cavan.

I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the great vision and foresight of the people who founded Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann 60 years ago and the success of this Organisation brings tremendous benefits to our country.

Our traditional music, song and dance is stronger than ever and this is a great opportunity to promote and further develop all aspects of our Irish culture.

It is clearly evident that a huge number of young musicians will once again display their talents in Cavan building on the traditions and knowledge handed down by the older generation.

I compliment Séamus Mac Cormaic, Uachtarán an Chomhaltais and Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú Ardstiúrthóir and the Chairman of the Fleadh Executive Committee Jack Keyes on the detailed preparatory work for Fleadh 2011.

I commend all the volunteers who work so hard to ensure that the Fleadh is an outstanding success.  The commitment, hard work and attention to detail of those volunteers plays a major part in ensuring that thousands and thousands of people have a fleadh cheoil of excellence.

It is a marvellous opportunity to market ourselves at a time of great economic challenges and it is no exaggeration to say that this cultural extravaganza will impact on every home and every family in Cavan Town and in a much wider catchment area.

Tá súil agam go mbainfidh gach éinne sult agus taithneamh as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2011. Is ócáid fíor bhródúil don Chontae agus déanaim comhghairdeas le gach éinne a bhfuil páirteach den céiliúradh seo.
