The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has performed the official opening of new community offices in Kingscourt.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Smith said that the new building was a perfect example of true community involvement and spirit. As well as a substantial element of the labour involved being provided by FAS, local companies Gypsum Industries Plc and Kingscourt Brick PLC, provided building materials free of charge.

“This fine building showcases the outcome of local industry working in close collaboration with local community leaders to provide facilities which are to the benefit of the local community. As well as being a very valuable amenity, those who engaged in the construction, were able to acquire practical skills which will ultimately enhance their employability options”, the Minister said.

Minister Smith highlighted the fact that the new Community Offices are at the very heart of Kingscourt life and as well as being the official administration base for the local FAS programme, it facilitates agencies such Cavan County Council; Cavan VEC; Cavan Enterprise Board and Cavan Citizen’s Information. It is also a focal point for the local community where public meetings can be held, as well providing valuable information to locals and visitors to Kingscourt.

He paid tribute to the local businesses, groups and FAS workers who worked together to deliver the new building, which is worth in the region of €600,000.

He also thanked the Kingscourt Community Centre Committee and in particular Chairman, Cllr. Clifford Kelly, who was a major influence in bringing the project to fruition.
