The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/ Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that the prospect of local authority co-funding for LEADER projects under the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013, has taken a major step forward.

Under the LEADER Programme, Cavan and Monaghan have been allocated over €12 million, as part of the largest ever package for rural development. To be administered by Cavan Partnership Ltd and County Monaghan Area Partnership, local community groups and individuals will receive funding for a range of projects in rural areas, including diversification into non-agricultural activities, business creation, basic community services, tourism, village renewal and development, conservation and rural development.

Minister Smith confirmed that he has been informed by Mr. Eamon O’Cuiv, T.D., Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs that approval has been given to allow co-funding with local authorities on the community capital projects of the LEADER Programme.

“If approved by EU Commission, this will allow Cavan and Monaghan County Councils to join with local groups in bringing projects forward. This should allow for these projects to come on stream far quicker, allowing for significant job creation opportunities in local communities throughout Cavan and Monaghan”, Minister Smith said.

Minister Smith added that he had raised the issue with Minister O’Cuiv at the request of Fianna Fáil Councillors in Cavan and Monaghan.
