Smith confirms two additional dentists to be appointed to Cavan/Monaghan dental services

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that HSE dental services in Cavan/Monaghan are to be boosted with the appointment of two additional dentists.

The HSE Dental Action Plan targets prevention at 7 and 12 year olds along with the provision of emergency care to all children up to their 16th birthday. However, due to a shortage of dentists, resources have been limited leading to a focus on emergency care only  and some limited targeting of 6th class children.

Minister Smith said that he was very reassured by the fact that the HSE will soon be appointing two additional dentists. “For some time now I have been aware that a shortage of resources has been preventing the HSE in fully carrying out its services targeted at primary school children in Cavan and Monaghan. It is absolutely essential that the HSE is able to target its services at prevention and I understand that these new appointments will allow for a focus on those at risk from dental decay and special needs. This is very good news for primary school children in Cavan and Monaghan”, the Minister said.
