THANKS
Mr Brendan Smith T.D. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food thanks the people of Cavan and Monaghan.
Last Friday the people of Cavan/Monaghan exercised their democratic right and once again returned me to Dáil Éireann. I am deeply grateful for the level of support I received. On what was a very difficult day for my Party, I very much appreciate that support. I regret that my colleague Margaret Conlon will not be with me in the next Dáil.
As a Public Representative I meet people on an ongoing basis who outline to me their concerns and the issues they would like to see addressed. Meeting with Constituents on a daily basis during the Campaign it is clear that a very high priority for people throughout the length and breadth of this Constituency is the need to create additional job opportunities.
As I said many times during the campaign, the need to keep investing in local communities is greater now than ever. In recent years in particular, great advances have been made in bringing investment to County Cavan which has improved public services and facilities in every Parish. We need to build on the progress achieved.
I am glad that already decisions made by this Government have earmarked substantial Government expenditure for this year for various projects in County Cavan including the €50 million Belturbet
By-Pass and the €7 million Ballyconnell Inner Relief Road and construction of both of these Projects will commence shortly.
In the new Dáil I will continue my work as diligently as possible on behalf of all Constituents in Cavan/Monaghan and will use every opportunity available to me to highlight the need to continue the substantial Government investment of recent years.
I will also highlight the critical importance of bringing new jobs to our County and protecting existing ones and the absolute need to provide more job opportunities will remain top of the agenda.
