New extension at St. Mogue’s College opened by Minister Brendan Smith
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Brendan Smith has performed the official opening of a new extension at St. Mogue's College, Bawnboy and the provision of broadband at the school.
Developed through a grant of €162,000 under the Additional Accommodation Scheme of the Department of Education and Science, the new extension consists of a new classroom, language laboratory and entrance lobby.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Smith noted that the new facilities were the latest in a series of developments at the College which has seen a complete upgrade of the building. “Since 2007, the College has secured in excess of €1.3 million from the Department of Education and Skills which has been invested in new classrooms, school canteen, reception areas, social area, car park, technical graphics room, heating system, communication system, rewiring and networking”, the Minister said.
He also highlighted the state-of-the art ICT facilities, which includes four new computer suites, a multi-media language laboratory, and video conferencing facilities.
The Minister referred to the fact that St. Morgue’s was justifiably proud of its reputation for excellence in education. This received a tremendous boost recently as Oxford and Cambridge Universities chose it as one of five schools in Ireland which will be featured in a publication outlining centres of educational excellence in the UK and Ireland. “From humble beginnings in the former workhouse in Bawnboy, to one of the most successful educational establishments in County Cavan, St. Mogue’s College has had a major impact on the lives of generations of students in West Cavan”, the Minister said.
Minister paid tribute to the work of those involved in developing this latest chapter in the development of the St. Mogue’s and said that he looked forward to the completion of a further new extension later this summer.
“Great credit must go to architect Pat Gaffney and builders Joe and Patrick McGovern. I’d like to congratulate Principal Anne Conaghan for her outstanding commitment to the school, as well as the hard work of the Board of Management. Thank’s also to Cavan CEO, Colm McEvoy for his energy and vision, and ongoing support for St. Mogue’s.
