Over €35.6 million for Cavan roads in 2011- Smith

Minister confirms that €12.5 million allocated for regional and local roads in the County this year

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D. and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have welcomed the announcement today, that €12.5 million has been allocated to Cavan County Council under the Regional and Local Roads programme for 2011.

This follows the allocation last week that the County Council had received €20.4 million under the National Roads Programme, which is in itself a major increase in funding on 2010.

The funding is also in addition to €2.75 million being provided by Cavan County Council from its own resources and represents a very significant investment at a time when the public finances are under severe pressure, according to Minister Smith.

Today’s announcement means that over €35.6 million will be spent on roads in County Cavan this year.

Minister Smith stated that this funding will mean further significant improvement in road conditions throughout the County. He added that the funding will allow for a continuation of the road restoration programme, which has been underway for a number of years. The Fianna Fáil Deputy and general Election candidate, stated that it is absolutely essential to continue this work to give people of the County the proper standard of roads to which they are entitled.

“ This funding will allow Cavan County Council. As well as Cavan Town Council; to progress essential maintenance and improvement works and should have a very positive impact on the road network throughout Cavan this year. The funding will also mean that a significant amount of additional work will be undertaken in the County this year due to more competitive pricing in the construction sector”, Minister Smith said.

Minister Smith and Senator Wilson also welcomed the allocation of €10.2 million to Monaghan County Council under the Regional and Local Roads programme 2011
