Cavan schools to get further €766,000 -Smith
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed primary and post-primary schools in County Cavan are to share in grants of over €766,000.
The Minor Works Grant for 2010/2011, which was announced by An Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan T.D., involves payments of €5,500 per school plus €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil.
The grant for primary schools allows schools to carry out minor works without needing to deal directly with the Department. The funds must be spent on the physical infrastructure of the school, or on items of furniture and equipment for educational use, including IT related equipment.
In addition, Minister Smith confirmed that each primary school will receive a playground and PE equipment grant of €1,000 plus €10 per pupil. In the case of a 50-pupil primary school, grants will be worth €1,500 and for a 300-pupil primary school, the grant will be €4,000.
Post-primary schools will receive a basic grant of €2,000 plus €20 per pupil in respect of PE equipment. In the case of a 200-student post-primary school, grants will be worth €6,000 and for a 500-student school, €12,000.
Minister Smith said that the minor works funding, as well as PE equipment grants were part of an important package of funding to primary and post primary schools. “Just recently, most schools in County Cavan have benefited from generous grants for computer equipment. This funding will allow them to purchase and upgrade essential equipment, including PE equipment, which will be to the benefit of all pupils,” Minister Smith said.
