Smith turns sod for major development at Virginia College
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/ Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has turned the sod for the development of a major building project at Virginia College.
The development, which will involve the construction of 8 new classrooms, is a major boost to Virginia College and follows on from extensive Government investment in the school in recent years, including a €7 million extension, as well as considerable upgrading carried out under the Summer Works Scheme over the last two years and a further investment of €85,000 for new fencing and ancillary work.
“An Tánaiste, and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, T.D., gave us the great news in April of this year while on a visit to Cavan that she had approved the necessary funding for this further development, and I am delighted with the turning of the sod, that construction of the new classrooms can go ahead.
Virginia College is one of our finest educational establishments and is making a very significant contribution to the local community. These new classrooms will greatly improve the teaching and learning environment at the school, and is another example of largest ever investment in schools that is evident in all parts of County Cavan under the School Building Programme”, Minister Smith said.
The Cavan/Monaghan T.D. and Minister, complimented the Principal of Virginia College, Ms. Karen Fitzpatrick, the CEO of Cavan VEC, Mr. Colin McEvoy, the Board of Management, the Parents’ Association, and all the staff, wishing them every success for the future.
