The funding, which has been approved by his colleague, An Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Ms. Mary Coughlan, T.D. will help schools to conserve their use of water which will have a consequent reduction in general  running costs for the schools.

The grants will allow schools to considerably lower water charges to the local authority through the installation of water displacement devices, percussion spray taps, thermostatic mixing valves and other water controls.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Smith said that the schools that have been awarded funding should be able to lower their running costs substantially, as well as contributing to water conservation generally. He noted that the announcement was part of the wider school building and modernisation programme which continues to see the largest ever investment in schools right across County Cavan.

He also noted that the approval of the grants followed on from the announcement last week, that all post primary schools in County Cavan are to benefit from grants for high-tech computer equipment.
