Smith welcomes significant further investment in Cavan schools
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/ Monaghan, T.D, Mr. Brendan Smith has welcomed approvals by the Minister for Education and Science of a further major investment programme in a number of local schools in County Cavan.
“In recent weeks, my colleague, the Minister for Education and Science, Mr. Batt O’Keeffe has approved funding for a whole range of improvements in Cavan schools. These improvements relate to a number of small scale projects which are nonetheless vital to the quality of the teaching environment that can be offered in these schools”, the Minister said.
The funding covers a number of areas, including new classroom accommodation, disabled access, toilets upgrade, roof works, window replacement, fencing and gates, tarmacadem and repair of yards and avenues, CCTV and external lighting
The following schools in County Cavan have received approval in recent weeks:
- Breifne College, Cavan (refurbish toilets, roof works, replace
windows, repair damaged area of main entrance, access avenue and
car park)
- St. Mogue’s College, Bawnboy (upgrade toilets and provide new main entrance lobby)
- St. Bricin’s College, Belturbet
(tarmac yard)
- Bailieborough Community School
(roof works)
- Killeshandra No 2 NS
(fencing and gates)
- St. Clare’s NS, Ballyjamesduff
(CCTV and external lighting)
In addition, a number of schools have received approval for additional accommodation, including classrooms and a resource room. These schools are:
- St. Killian’s NS, Mullagh
- Crossreagh NS, Mullagh
- St. Bricin’s College
“Despite the very serious situation facing the public finances, this Government continues to recognise the importance of investing in school buildings. I am very pleased that so many schools will now be able to go ahead with significant improvement works which I am sure will be welcomed by the teachers, parents and of course, the school going children”, the Minister concluded.
