The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has performed the official opening of the new tartan running track for Shercock Athletic Club.

The track was developed at a total cost of €210,000, €100,000 of which came from the Sports Capital Programme, with the balance being funded through a grant of €11,000 from Cavan County Council and through fundraising in the local community.

Highlighting that the Government’s Sports Capital Programme was crucial in facilitating the development of the track, Minister Smith noted that the club has benefited from total funding of €283,000 in recent years.

Minister Smith paid a warm tribute to all associated with Shercock Athletic Club for their vision, commitment and dedication in putting in place this excellent new facility.

In particular, he highlighted the key role of Francis McDermott who did tremendous work behind the scenes in lobbying for the Sports Capital funding that was successfully secured.

He concluded by complimenting the coaches John McGeever and Margaret Ruxton, as well as all the coaching team for “their great success in developing the obvious talent in this club which has seen the athletes of all ages achieving such success on the track and field”, he said.
