Smith confirms €2,000 grant for Cavan branch of Irish Wheelchair Association


The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that a grant of €2,000 has been approved for the Cavan branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association.

The grant, which was approved by his colleague the Minister for Social Protection, Mr. Eamon O’Cuiv, T.D., will fund the writing, production and touring of a play dealing with issues in relation to personal experiences of people with a disability. The project will involve members of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Drama therapy group in partnership with actors from the Cavan Area.

 

Minister Smith said that the grant is part of a Government initiative to fund locally based activities to mark 2010 the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in local communities. “The Cavan branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association is a very dynamic and highly proactive advocate on behalf of local people with a disability. This grant will allow them to develop and produce a play which will be very important in raising general awareness about the personal experiences of those in our community with disability”, Minister Smith said.
