Smith welcomes €1.5 million forestry grants for Cavan

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D. has welcomed the announcement that County Cavan is to benefit from payments of over €1.5 million under the annual forestry premiums.

Minister Smith stated that the payments are part of  the annual forestry premiums of almost €53 million to over 11,000 forest owners.

This is the bulk payment run of the annual forestry premium under the Forestry Programme, which is payable each year for twenty years in the case of farmers and for fifteen years in the case of non-farmers.  The vast majority of recipients are farmers.  It is estimated that the total paid out in forest premium payments will exceed €60 million by year-end.

Minister Smith said that the development of forestry was an important priority for his Department underlined by the commitments in the renewed Programme for Government and the allocation of almost €120 million to Forestry for 2010. “These premium payments are a very welcome boost to forest owners in County Cavan, most of whom are farmers and will encourage the continuing development of this valuable indigenous industry”, he said.
