Smith launches 2010 Fleadh Cheoil
Speaking at the launch in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell which was also attended by Senator Labhrás Ó’Murchú, Ard-Stiurthoir, Chomhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Minister Smith said: “it’s no exaggeration to say that this cultural extravaganza will impact on every home and every family in Cavan Town and beyond. It is a marvellous opportunity to market ourselves at a time of great economic difficulty and with an expected earning potential of €30 million, will be an enormous boost to the hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and public houses in our Town”.
Stating that the summer is traditionally a time of festival in Ireland, where young people in particular flock to music venues throughout the country, the Minister said that as a Cavan man he was proud that “here in August we will have the biggest of them all, with over 200,000 visitors, young and old, descending on our town, to listen and enjoy the traditional music and song of over 11,000 musicians from all over the world”.
Minister Smith alluded to the fact that the last time the Fleadh was in Cavan was in 1954 and the country was also going through tough times: “as history shows, we came through them, just as I am convinced we will now. I’d like to think that the forthcoming festival of music and culture will give our town a fillip and boost that will lift the spirits of all of us”, he said.
