Additional accommodation for Cavan General Hospital

Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister of State and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have received confirmation from the Health Service Executive North Eastern Region that a new modular building for Cardiac Rehabilitation Outpatients will be provided at Cavan General Hospital.

Minister Smith stated that the provision of this building will in turn facilitate the converting back of a six bed ward for inpatients. He welcomed this initative of the Hospital Management and the Health Service Executive and he stated that the provision of additional beds is a positive development.

The Health Service Executive in their reply to Minister Smith’s representations regarding the need to provide additional facilities stated that the design team will now submit the relevant planning application and some of the necessary preparatory work has now been undertaken.

Minister Smith was further advised by the Health Service Executive that tenders will be sought for this Modular Building and indeed the overall project will cost in the region of €500,000. It is expected that this Modular Building will be fully commissioned and operational by August 2006.

Minister Smith stated that this modular building proposal for Cardiac Rehabilitation Outpatients is separate from the major project which is comprised of the re-development of the shelled out Surgical 3 Ward, providing 21 additional beds, and the commissioning of the fourth operating theatre. He added that that project which will cost in the region of €6.65 million is now at detailed design stage.

Senator Wilson stated that along with Minister Smith they will continue to impress upon An Tanaiste and Minister for Heath and Children, Ms. Mary Harney, T.D., and the Health Service Executive the need to have the major project progressed as quickly as possible.
