Council to acquire Market House in Ballyconnell

Mr Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State has announced that the Department of Defence has now agreed to the sale of the Market House in Ballyconnell to Cavan County Council.

Minister Smith along with Senator Diarmuid Wilson and Councillor Sean Smith met the Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea T.D. in relation to the need to progress this proposal and the Chief State Solicitor’s Office has been instructed by the Department of Defence to process the legal formalities towards completion of the sale.

Minister Smith stated that the premises known as the Market House, Ballyconnell was occupied by the Defence Forces, predominantly the Reserve Defence Forces, since 1948 and in recent years the Reserve Defence Forces used the hall and offices to the rear part of that property.  He added that Cavan County Council had by way of an agreement with the Department of Defence use of the front portion of the building for some years.

Councillor Sean Smith told the Anglo Celt that the agreement of the Department of Defence to sell this property to Cavan County Council will enable the Council to provide a number of services from that particular Centre and it will be a welcome addition to the Council’s property portfolio in the Ballyconnell area and it will enable other developments to be undertaken.

Councillor Smith paid tribute to Minister O’Dea for his help in progressing this proposal.
