Major Investment Project at Loughan House


Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister of State has welcomed the commencement of construction work for the provision of a new accommodation block at Loughan House. 

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Michael McDowell, T.D., in correspondence to Minister Smith and Councillor Eddie Feeley stated that the new block will provide accommodation for approximately 60 offenders and will contribute towards meeting the Prison Service objective of moving to a predominantly single cell/room model.  Minister McDowell added that the new unit is expected to take about ten months to complete.

 

The Chairman of Cavan County Council and Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Eddie Feeley has welcomed this announcement by Minister Smith and Minister McDowell and he stated that a programme of modernisation work commenced in Loughan House in mid 2004.  Minister Smith stated that that programme of work included a new two-storey block containing modern purpose built workshops, new visiting facilities and an administration area.  The bedrooms and other areas of the main building were also refurbished.

 

The Anglo-Celt understand that there are more than 60 offenders in Loughan House at present and that it is the most cost effective prison institution in the country. 

 

Councillor Eddie Feeley has stated that this major investment at Loughan House will copper-fasten the future of this facility and he added that it is most important for employment in the local area.  He added that this major investment is most welcome.
