€9 Million approved for Kingscourt Water & Sewerage Scheme
The Environment Minister in his correspondence to Minister Smith and Local Councillor Clifford Kelly stated that the Kingscourt Water Supply and Sewerage Schemes are being funded under his Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2005-2007 at an overall cost of over €9million. He added that they consist of three main elements – improvements to the water and sewer networks, the development of new water sources, and, thirdly, the provision of a new water treatment plant and an extension of the existing waste water facility, which he has now cleared to go to tender.
Minister Smith stated that only last month the Minister had approved the tender for the mains replacement contract for the water supply scheme which also included some works to the sewer networks and the Council are currently advancing the development of the new water sources.
Councillor Clifford Kelly in a comment to the Anglo Celt stated that the contract for the new and improved treatment plants will complete the provision of modern water services infrastructure for Kingscourt and environs. He added that it will greatly improve water supply capacity and environmental standards and also provide a solid platform for economic growth in the area for the next 20 years. The Kingscourt Councillor stated that with this new infrastructure in place Kingscourt can expand and develop without risk to the environment.
Minister Roche further added that he is well aware of the importance of this scheme locally and he has therefore asked the Council to ensure that there is no delay in seeking tenders with a view to construction commencing at the earliest possible date.
Minister Smith added these decisions by Minister Roche are a continuation of this Government’s major investment in the upgrading and provision of new water and sewerage facilities throughout the County. He added that there is an unprecedented level of investment in water and sewerage facilities and also in the Rural Water Programme in County Cavan in 2006 and that this major investment programme will continue.
