Major Health Investment in Cavan


Mr Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State has welcomed the publication of the Health Service Executive Capital Programme 2006-2010 and he stated that major health projects are to be advanced in County Cavan.

Minister Smith stated that almost €4m. has been allocated for 2006 towards the provision of an additional 21 beds and a fourth theatre in Cavan General Hospital. He added that the overall cost of this project is almost €7.5 million. He stated that the Development Control Plan for the further development of Cavan General Hospital will also be advanced and he added that this particular plan proposes a further range of new facilities for Cavan General Hospital.

 

Minister Smith also stated that the proposal to provide a new modular building for Cardiac Rehabilitation Outpatients is being progressed and that the provision of this building will in turn facilitate the converting back of a 5-bed ward for inpatients. He stated that the Health Service Executive had informed him that it is proposed to have this Modular Building fully commissioned and operational by August 2006 and that the overall cost of this project is in the region of €600,000.

 

Minister Smith also announced that it is proposed to advance shortly to tender stage the provision of a major new Health Centre in Ballinagh and €500,000 will be spent on this project this year.  He added that the overall cost of that Health Centre will be in excess of €1.1m and the Centre will provide multi-disciplinary Clinical and General Practice facilities in a modern appropriate environment.

 

The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. also welcomed the proposal to replace the Dr. John Sullivan Home with a modern purpose built home for dementia sufferers which will be designed to maximise the quality care for this particular patient group.  He added that the Design Brief and associated documents are complete and the overall cost of this project will be €8.6m.

 

Minister Smith stated that the proposal to provide a Primary Health Care Unit in Cavan Town is a very welcome development and this facility will encompass a wide range of non-acute services including multi-disciplinary clinical, general practice and administration facilities. He added that the overall estimated cost of this project is €7 million.

 

Minister Smith stated that this Capital Programme is of the utmost importance to County Cavan and will assist considerably in enhancing the delivery of health services for the people in this particular catchment area. He added that many other smaller scale projects throughout the County will also benefit from this Capital Programme with substantial expenditure this year.
