The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Brendan Smith T.D. has welcomed the awarding of €1.4 million by the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly (BMW) to Cavan Town.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Brendan Smith T.D. has welcomed the awarding of €1.4 million by the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly (BMW) to Cavan Town.

The funding, which has been allocated under the European Regional Development Fund Gateway and Hub Town Initiative, will be used for the construction of the Eastern Access Route in the Town. The money will allow for the provision of a cycle way and footpaths, and will facilitate traffic management and the opening of new areas for development.

Welcoming the news, the Minister said: “this is a tremendous boost to Cavan Town which has grown considerably in recent years and requires ongoing investment to its infrastructure. The new Eastern Access Route, will not only improve the flow of traffic for those living and working in Cavan Town, but is also a very welcome development for the business community and is bound to make the Town a more attractive place to invest in, and have a positive knock on affect on the creation of jobs. I know that this will also be particularly welcome news to Cavan County Council, who have been so important to Cavan’s status as a hub town.

Coming as it does from EU sourced funding, this announcement is another very tangible reason as why the people of Cavan supported the Lisbon Treaty so convincingly last week”.
