Broadband for Bailieboro and Cootehill


Mr Brendan Smith T.D. Minister of State, has announced that Tenders will be sought shortly in respect of the provision of Broadband Telecommunications infrastructure for Bailieboro and Cootehill.

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Noel Dempsey T.D. in response to representations by Minister Smith stated that his Department, in conjunction with the Local Authorities is developing projects for five towns in the North East region under Phase Two of the Programme, including Bailieboro and Cootehill. He added that the planning and the detailed design stage are complete and the Invitation to Tender (ITT) for the works contract is due to be issued shortly. 

 

Minister Smith was further informed that construction work for these towns is expected to commence in June of this year and the networks should be completed in April 2007.  He added that the overall cost of the Cavan networks is estimated at €2.27 million with the lengths of these towns at 4.9km and 5.6km respectively.

 

Minister Smith has welcomed this further development in the roll out of Broadband Telecommunications in the Cavan/Monaghan area and recently the North East Phase One Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) was completed and includes Cavan Town and Kingscourt.

 

Minister Dempsey, in his correspondence, to the Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. stated that these Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) will allow the private sector to offer world-class Broadband services at competitive costs.

 

The Cavan / Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. stated that the Government is committed to the roll out of this important infrastructure and Cavan/Monaghan area will be a major beneficiary.
