Additional Funding for Recycling Facilities


Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food has welcomed the decision of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Mr. Dick Roche T.D. to allocate additional funding to Local Authorities to support the operating costs of recycling facilities and €124,140 additional grant assistance has now been allocated to Cavan County Council.

Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food has welcomed the decision of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Mr. Dick Roche T.D. to allocate additional funding to Local Authorities to support the operating costs of recycling facilities and €124,140 additional grant assistance has now been allocated to Cavan County Council.

 

Minister Roche in his correspondence to Minister Smith stated that as part of the 2005 Environment Fund Programme €7 million was earmarked to assist local authorities with the costs which they incur in operating their recycling facilities. 

 

“I am pleased to now be able to provide local authorities with this funding which is being distributed on the basis of the information from local authorities relating to the twelve months to the end of June 2005.  I have on this occasion paid particular note to the quantity of materials that local authorities collect at recycling facilities for as its in all our interests to maximise the level of goods that are recycled and thereby reduce our reliance on landfill” stated Minister Roche.

 

Minister Smith stated that the Environment Fund was established with the revenues obtained from the Plastic Bag Levy introduced in March 2002 and the Landfill Levy introduced in July 2002 and he added that the Fund is used to provide assistance/support in respect of a range of waste management, litter and other environmental initiatives.
