Over €24 Million for Cavan Roads - Smith
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Brendan Smith and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have welcomed the announcement today, that almost €13 million has been allocated to Cavan County Council under the Regional and Local Roads Programme for 2010. In addition to this, Cavan Town Council has been granted €195,000 under the programme.
The funding, which has been approved by the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey T.D., is in addition to €3.2 million being provided this year by Cavan County Council from its own resources and represents a very significant investment at a time when public finances are under severe pressure, according to Minister Smith.
Minister Smith stated that this funding will mean further significant improvement in road conditions throughout the County. He added that the funding will allow for a continuation of the road restoration programme, which has been underway for a number of years. The Fianna Fáil Deputy stated that it is absolutely essential to continue this work to give the people of the County the proper standard of roads to which they are entitled.
Minister Smith stated that all of County Cavan will benefit from the allocation and that Minister Dempsey had approved specific grants for a number of road projects identified by the Council, including –
- Ballyjamesduff to N3 at Lackenmore €250,000
- Arvagh/Crossdoney €200,000
- Doogary to Whitefield Cross €250,000
- Killeshandra/Crossdoney €300,000
- Killeshandra to Whitefield Cross €250,000
Senator Diarmuid Wilson stated that of particular significance is a further allocation of € 600,000 towards the preliminary design work for the East/West Link Road from Dundalk to Sligo, as well as a further € 600,000 for the Cavan Eastern Town Centre Access route.
“Having already been allocated €7.5 million under the National Roads Programme earlier this month, this announcement by my colleague Minister Noel Dempsey means that in 2010, well over €24 million will be spent on roads in County Cavan. This funding will allow Cavan County Council, as well as Cavan Town Council, to progress essential maintenance and improvement works and should have a very positive impact on the road network throughout Cavan this year. The funding will also mean that a significant amount of additional work will be undertaken in the County this year due to more competitive pricing in the construction sector”, Minister Smith said.
Minister Smith and Senator Wilson stated that along with the Fianna Fáil County and Town Councillors, they would continue to impress upon the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey, the need to continue the high level of investment in the road network in County Cavan.
They also welcomed the allocation of € 12.4 million to Monaghan County Council under the Programme.
