Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State has announced that €500,000 has now been allocated to Cavan County Council by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Dick Roche T.D. under the National Disability Strategy.
Minister Roche in his correspondence to Minister of State Brendan Smith stated that the Local Authorities have a key role in implementing the requirements of the Local Government Outline Sectoral Plan and that this extra funding has been introduced to kick-start a multi-annual programme of initiatives by local authorities under the National Disability Strategy.
Minister Roche further added that the funding will be used for the provision of disability awareness training and initiation of the preparation of accessibility audits, adaptation of information systems and equipment for people with special needs, providing and improving, where needed, accessibility to public buildings roads and pavements, parks, amenities, heritage sites and other public areas for which local authorities have responsibility.
Minister Smith stated that this is a very welcome allocation for the Council and it will enable a substantial programme of works to be undertaken this year.
