More Broadband Investment

Bailieborough and Cootehill to benefit.

Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., has welcomed the decision by the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Noel Dempsey, T.D., to issue a second call for proposals to local authorities to build advanced Broadband Networks in a number of towns including Bailieborough and Cootehill.

Minister Smith stated that already Metropolitan Area Networks have been built or under construction in a number of towns throughout the country including Cavan and Kingscourt and he stated that the Minister’s decision will ensure the provision of high-speed broadband infrastructure to a number of additional towns.  He added that this partnership with central Government and Local Authorities is a welcome development and the infrastructure will be made available on an open access basis to all telecom operators and will provide a fillip to competition.

Minister Smith added that the widespread availability of open-access, affordable, always-on broadband infrastructure and services for businesses and citizens is a priority for the Government.  He added that a modern high-speed, low-cost communications and broadband network is an essential enabler of economic activity and social inclusion.

Minister Smith stated that Cavan County Council hosted a very successful seminar recently at which Minister Dempsey was the Guest Speaker and that event placed heavy emphasis in particular on the opportunity for smaller towns and communities to avail of the Group Broadband Scheme.
