Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food has been informed by the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr. Noel Dempsey T.D. that some mobile phone operators have introduced all-island tariff options for business and bill paying customers.

Minister Dempsey in his correspondence to Minister Smith who had raised concerns on behalf of constituents in relation to mobile phone roaming charges states that he fully supports the extension of an all-island tariff option to pay-as-you-go mobile users who represent around 70% of the mobile customer base.  He adds that entering into such arrangements would involve business decisions which are a matter for the operators.

“I have taken the opportunity at meetings with the operators to raise this issue and will continue to do so.  Indeed, my Northern Ireland counterpart, Angela Smith MP and I, together with the Regulators, are due to meet the operators in September, where it is intended this issue will be raised as part of the discussions.

For my part I will continue to encourage ComReg, together with OFCOM, to work with the operators North and South to seek an expansion of the all-island tariffs” stated Minister Dempsey.
