Death of Pope John Paul II
Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food in paying tribute to the late Pope John Paul II stated that he was an outstanding and inspirational leader whose appeal extended way beyond the Catholic Church.
“Throughout his Pontificate he was tireless in his work for peace and reconciliation throughout the world.
This generation can recall with great pride and satisfaction great Papal visits to all parts of the world and in reality Pope John Paul II literally took the papacy around the world, which was extremely innovative 27 years ago.
Today we live in a new Europe and the work and inspiration of Pope John Paul II in helping to liberate his own native Poland and Eastern Europe will never be equalled. As Irish people we can always rejoice in the magnificent 1979 first ever Papal visit to our country”, stated Minister Smith.
The Northern Standard understands that Minister Smith signed the Book of Condolences in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh while on a visit to Newry and Armagh last Monday.
