Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food has announced that the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. Dick Roche T.D. has now approved Cavan County Council’s Preliminary Report for the Cootehill Water Supply Scheme.
This news has been warmly welcomed by the Cootehill Fianna Fáil Councillors Michael McCarey, Sean Igoe and Gerry McDonagh. They stated that this investment of €4 million is important for the future development of the town.
Minister Smith stated that the Scheme which will entail an investment in the region of €4 million provides for upgrading the town’s current Water Treatment Plant and replacing and refurbishing part of the water distribution network. He added that the present system is close to capacity and the new works will ensure a high quality water supply to cater for the needs of consumers in Cootehill and environs for the foreseeable future.
“I have allocated the necessary funds for the scheme in my Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2004-2006. My approval of the Preliminary Reports now clears the way for Cavan County Council to proceed with the preparation of Contract Documents. Once these are approved, the Council will be in a position to invite tenders for the scheme. In view of the importance of the scheme to the county, I have asked the Council to have the contract documents produced with all possible speed” stated Minister Roche in his correspondence to Minister of State Brendan Smith.
