The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has performed the official opening of the newly renovated Curravagh NS, Glangevlin.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. Mr. Brendan Smith has performed the official opening of the newly renovated Curravagh NS, Glangevlin.

The renovations, which were entirely funded by a grant of almost €110,000 from the Department of Education and Science under the Summer Works Scheme 2009, consist of newly installed windows and doors; redecorated classrooms; electrical rewiring; emergency lighting; new fire alarm system; as well the refurbishment of the staff and pupil toilets.

Speaking at the ceremony which included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, Minister Smith said that he was delighted to be present at such an important event for the local community, particularly so as he grew up in the area and attended nearby Bawnboy NS as a boy.

Highlighting the success for the Summer Works Scheme run by the Department of Education and Science under which the extensive renovation work was funded, Minister Smith said that it was particularly gratifying that all the work had been carried out by local companies. He also noted that his colleague, Minister Batt O’Keeffe has announced that the 2010 Summer Works Scheme is proceeding and will have the double benefit of providing better facilities for our young students and employment for local builders and tradesmen.

The Minister complimented the school on the very positive Whole School Evaluation report it has received from the Department and in particular the fact that the school inspector had found that “teachers work very hard to present interesting programmes of learning and attractive motivating classrooms for their pupils”.

The Minister also paid tribute to the very positive role of the Board of Management of the school, under the chairmanship of Fr. John O’Donnell and complimented the deep commitment of principal Ms. Tara McGovern (a past pupil of Curravagh NS) and her colleague Ms. Gillian Forde to making the school such a special place of learning.

In conclusion, he acknowledged the presence of former principal, Mr. Luke McGinley and said that it was a fitting tribute to his work over many years that Curravagh NS has received such a comprehensive and impressive renovation.
