Minister of State Brendan Smith, T.D., has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr Dick Roche, T.D., of an allocation of E 13.650 Million to Cavan County Council for the Rural Water Programme for 2005. He added that this major allocation funds the ongoing work on the West Cavan Bundling Scheme, which is well advanced and serves 1,300 households and similarly the East Cavan Scheme, which serves 3,400 households.

The Minister stated that the South West Cavan Bundle, which serves 1,600 households is also being funded by this allocation and it has a completion date of early 2006.  He added that the South West Cavan Water Treatment Project is being administered as a partnership between Cavan County Council and the Gartylough, Bruskey/Killydoon, Lavagh/Ballyheelan and Crossdoney Group Water Schemes.  This project will procure new water treatment facilities for 6,000 people and provide a water supply to nearly 1,000 farms.  He added that construction is also underway on the Castlerahan /Munterconnaught Scheme, which is of crucial importance to that area.

Deputy Smith stated that the Rural Water Programme is an essential and important part of the infrastructure in rural Ireland for households, for farms, for business and commerce in general.

He added that a substantial programme of upgrading and improvement works on group schemes has been underway in the county as a result of the very substantial funding provided by the Government in recent years and he complimented the Council on their very active approach working in conjunction with local group water schemes.  He stated that the County Council’s positive approach and commitment is to be commended.

"This ongoing investment by the Minister for the Environment in the Rural Water Programme is clear evidence of this Government's commitment to development in rural Ireland and the provision of necessary infrastructure for all households throughout the country.  This year’s allocation means that a total of almost E 50 Million has been provided over the past few years towards upgrading Rural Water Schemes in Co. Cavan and is a very welcome investment and I am particularly glad that all parts of the county have benefited” , concluded Minister Smith.
