Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister of State has been informed by An Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Ms Mary Harney, T.D., that the estimated capital cost of the provision of additional facilities at Cavan General Hospital is € 6.65 Million with full-year revenue consequences of € 5.2 Million.

An Tánaiste was replying to Minister Smith’s ongoing representations regarding the need to provide additional beds at Cavan General Hospital.

“My Department has had further enquiries made of the Executive’s North Eastern Area (Health Service Executive) and is advised that it received approval in July 2005 to appoint a design team for the project.  A detailed design is currently being progressed comprising the re-development of the shelled-out Surgical Three ward and the commissioning of a fourth operating theatre that will support the Cavan/Monaghan joint department of surgery.  There is provision for a total of 25 beds, comprising 18 medical beds, a four-bed high dependency unit and 3 single-bedded isolation rooms, a deficiency previously identified for the hospital.

The Health Service Executive has further advised that the estimated cost of the project is € 6.65 Million, with full-year revenue consequences of € 5.2 Million.  The Executive has also stated that a timescale of eighteen months can be expected between approval to appoint a design team and the eventual completion and commissioning of the additional capacity.  It is a matter for the HSE to prioritise this project within its overall funding resources”, stated An Tánaiste in her correspondence to Minister Smith.

Minister Brendan Smith also told The Anglo-Celt that as a result of initiatives taken by An Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Ms Mary Harney, T.D., to address ongoing problems in A&E Departments that recently 2 Medical Registrars were appointed for the A&E Department of Cavan General Hospital.  Arrangements are being made to convert part of a Day Ward to a Discharge Area to facilitate patients who are being discharged from the Hospital and also patients awaiting admissions.
