Massive funding for Rural Water Programme

Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr Martin Cullen, T.D., in Cavan this week of an allocation of E 12.133 Million to Cavan County Council for the Rural Water Programme for the year 2004.

He stated that this decision by the Minister reflects the accelerated progress by the Council in implementing the devolved Rural Water Programme and indeed the progress achieved over the past 6 years in upgrading group water schemes.

The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. stated that this funding covers expenditure on the provision of new group schemes and upgrading works on deficient schemes, the upgrading and taking in charge of group schemes of local authorities and the provision of small public water and sewerage schemes in smaller towns and villages.

Deputy Smith stated that the Rural Water Programme is an essential and important part of the infrastructure in rural Ireland for households, for farms, for business and commerce in general.

He added that a substantial programme of upgrading and improvement works on group schemes has been underway in the county as a result of the very substantial funding provided by the Government in recent years.

"This ongoing investment by the Minister for the Environment in the Rural Water Programme is clear evidence of this Government's commitment to development in rural Ireland and the provision of necessary infrastructure for all households throughout the country.  This year’s allocation means that a total of E 32 Million has been provided over the past few years towards upgrading Rural Water Schemes in Co. Cavan and is a very welcome investment”, concluded the Fianna Fáil Deputy.
