National Spatial Stratagey
Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., in response to enquiries from The Anglo-Celt stated that he had lobbied at Government level to have Cavan Town identified in the National Spatial Strategy as a centre for major development.
Deputy Smith recalled “In the summer of 2002 I worked closely with Senator Diarmuid Wilson, the late County Manager - Brian Johnston, Deputy County Manager – Seamus Neely, County Engineer – Ger Finn and Chief Executive of Cavan County Enterprise Board – Vincent Reynolds and together we highlighted the need to have hub status conferred on Cavan and we highlighted the strengths of our case. We had outlined that the then recently published census had shown a welcome growth in the population of Co. Cavan and we had emphasised that the people of Cavan, the local authorities, our locally based statutory agencies would not be found wanting in playing their part in ensuring the success that could be achieved with the identification of Cavan as a major development centre”.
Deputy Smith stated that along with Senator Diarmuid Wilson and the local authority officials he lobbied consistently and forcefully to have the proper status accorded to Cavan Town and he is glad to have contributed to this successful work, which resulted in the Government making the proper decision, based on the strengths of the case, to designate Cavan as a Hub Town Centre. He added that this status would encourage development and investment in Cavan Town and throughout the entire county for many decades to come.
