More accommodation for Loughan House
Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., has been informed by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Michael McDowell, T.D., that a major extension is to be provided at Loughan House including new accommodation for 50 prisoners.
Deputy Smith stated that he had received confirmation from the Irish Prison Service and work will commence shortly on a two storey building for workshop administration and visitation purposes in place of the existing single storey structure.
Deputy Smith stated that the Irish Prison Service has also invited expressions of interest from experienced developers who wish to be considered for inclusion on a panel from which a shortlist will be invited to tender for the provision of a new accommodation block that will house approximately 50 prisoners.
Councillor Eddie Feeley has welcomed the confirmation that these two major building projects will proceed and he added that construction on the new two storey building will commence at an early date and he added that the new accommodation block is likely to go to construction in early 2005.
The Fianna Fáil T.D. stated that sometime ago along with Councillor Eddie Feeley he had discussed with An Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, T.D., and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Michael McDowell, the potential for further expansion at Loughan House and he added that this major investment will secure the longterm future of Loughan House. Both Councillor Feeley and Deputy Smith told The Anglo-Celt that it is important that the maximum possible use is made of this prison facility and they instanced the importance of Loughan House as a source of employment for the general West Cavan area.
