The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan Monaghan, T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed today (Tuesday) that three major school building projects in County Cavan have taken a major step forward.

The Minister confirmed, that his colleague, the Minister for Education and Science, Mr. Batt O’Keeffe, T.D., has informed him that the go-ahead has been given to appoint design teams for the provision of a new school at St. Killian’s National School, Mullagh; extension and refurbishments of Virginia Mixed National School and St. Clare’s Primary School, Cavan Town.

Minister Smith said that despite the extremely difficult situation currently facing the public finances, the Government continues to invest in modernising our school buildings and this year will be allocating €579 million under the schools building programme. “During the last year in particular, I have had the good fortune to be present at the opening of many new building projects in schools right across County Cavan. These developments are a matter of great pride for the local communities involved and it is only fitting that we give our young people as modern an environment as possible to learn in. The appointment of design teams for these school projects will be a very important stage in the development process. I also look forward to further positive announcements under the building programmes of the Department of Education and Science for schools in County Cavan”,  the Minister said.

Local Fianna Fáil member of Cavan County Council, Councillor Shane P. O’Reilly warmly welcomed the positive news for St. Killian’s NS, Mullagh, which will be getting a new school and Virginia Mixed National School, while his colleague, Councillor Patricia Walsh said that this was marvellous news for St. Clare’s, Cavan Town.
